WHAT IS SHUKLA PAKSHA?

Hindu lunar calendar is divided into two fortnights - Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. While Shukla Paksha is known as the waxing phase of Moon, Krishna Paksha is the waning duration of Moon. Each Paksha consists of 15 Tithis or lunar days, such as Pratipada - 1st day, Dwitiya - 2nd day, up to Purnima or Amavasya, i.e. the 15th day.

Shukla Paksha literally means ‘bright half’ of the lunar month. It marks the period when Moon transitions from Amavasya, i.e. no moon to Purnima, i.e. full moon, reflecting increasing light and celestial energy. This phase starts the day after Amavasya, when moon gradually becomes brighter and fuller, which is metaphorically associated with increasing positivity and prosperity.
