WHAT IS MUHURTA?

‘MUHURTA’ is a Sanskrit word, meaning ‘division of time’. In Hindu calendar, 24 hours of a day and night are divided into 30 Muhurtas. Therefore, each Muhurta has a duration of 48 minutes (24 hours / 30 Muhurtas = 0.8 hours = 48 minutes). Each Muhurta is further divided into smaller units - 1 Muhurta = 30 Kala (1 Kala = 1.6 minutes or 96 seconds) 1 Kala = 30 Kashta (1 Kashta ≈ 3.2 seconds).

However, the exact timing varies slightly each day and depends on geographical location. The formula used to calculate Abhijit Muhurta is - Total daylight duration = Time from sunrise to sunset. Thereafter, the midpoint of this duration is calculated.

Abhijit Muhurta is centered around this midpoint, extending 24 minutes before and 24 minutes after. For example, if the sun rises at 6:00 AM and sets at 6:00 PM, the total duration of daylight is 12 hours. The midday point is 12:00 PM. Thus, Abhijit Muhurta would be from 11:36 AM to 12:24 PM.

Among 30 muhurtas, Abhijit muhurta is the eighth period spanning the last ½ muhurta of the morning and the first ½ muhurta of the afternoon. Unlike other muhurta timings that are determined by planetary positions and lunar phases, Abhijit Muhurta is a daily window of opportunity that occurs irrespective of planetary transits.

However, it is important to note that Abhijit Muhurta is nullified on Wednesdays and is not recommended for auspicious activities on that day.

Abhijit Muhurta is not effective on Wednesdays because of a difference in planetary energies. Wednesday is ruled by Mercury or planet Budh, and Abhijit Muhurta despite being auspicious on other days, has a slightly conflicting energy with Mercury on Wednesdays.
